Born in 1877 in Portsmouth and educated at Durham School, he joined the 3rd (Militia) Battalion DLI in 1896 as a Second Lieutenant, then the 1st Battalion DLI in 1899 as a Regular officer. He served with 1 DLI in the Boer War and was severely wounded at Vaal Krantz in February 1900. Later he served in the Transvaal with his battalion. He retired in 1902 and went to Canada but rejoined 3 DLI in 1914 and served with 2nd (Garrison) Battalion The Devonshire Regiment during the Great War.
